framed eyes (2024)
framed eyes is my most recent project, inspired by our modern facades I extract its primary building
element; ‘the window’. It takes three roles in the process, an opening, a frame and a mirror; repeating
itself to form our facades, our streets and our cities. A series of 7 works where one piece carries on from
my previous series ‘phantom boundaries’, that piece being an actual window.
Materilas used - scaffolding boards, types of flooring boards, cable ties, screen pritnting pigment made
using red-oxide, concrete
Windows windows everywhere
some look in,
all look out
Pass by
you look through
Pass by
others look you
Frame a view
stuck in time
by you
for you.
'They' shine in the morning
and you shine at night
"Draw the curtains,
It’s getting dark"
The awkwardness of modern spaces
The awkwardness of ‘eyes on you’
Windows facing windows
Windows facing walls
Windows facing trains
Windows facing drains
"Can I get the sea-facing room, please?"
"Sorry ma'am, we only have two"
You pay for the view
And the city does too
Each room should have one
Each toilet should too
Each house should have plenty
Unless the neighbours do too
Windows make facades
Facades make streets
Streets make cities
Cities make us
But we make the cities
and choose those facades,
A repetition
of function over form
So,
Here at assembly
What are we framing?
One frame's the wall
One frame's the street
One frame's the frame
and
One frame's you!
